Music fans of Sai Kham Lake, who first came into prominence with the song Mandalay Yauk Shan Galay Ta Yauk (A Shan in Mandalay) more than 3 decades ago, are making preparations to honor him on his 60th birthday which falls on 27 April, according to sources from the border.
Though a Shan by birth, he had written several songs in both Shan and Burmese, earning him wide respect and admiration all over the country by both Shans and non-Shans alike.

The principal organizers of the event in Mandalay, where Sai Kham Lake has made his home, will be the Rangoon and Mandalay Literary and Cultural Societies. Many famous singers, both traditional and modern, have been invited, according to one of the sources.
Details of the event are still being worked out, according to another.
According to tradition, each 12 years mark the end of one circle in a person’s life and 60 years or 5 circles mark the full circle of life. Conventional wisdom dictates that a sacred ceremony be held to enhance one’s longevity on the day he/she turns 60.
Shans in Chiangmai are also planning to celebrate his 60th birthday.
